On October 16, 2023, the president and faculty members of the Ecole Haute Horlogerie Supérieure des Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in France will visit Hitotsubashi. In order to expand academic exchanges between the two countries’ leading academic institutions in the social sciences, we will hold a workshop between EHESS faculty members and Hitotsubashi University faculty/graduate students as follows. Faculty members and graduate students of Hitotsubashi University who wish to participate are requested to register at the registration site by October 8.

【About the Speakers】
Leopoldo Iribarren
Following a double major in engineering and philosophy at the Universidad Central de Venezuela, Leopoldo Iribarren completed his Ph.D. at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) in 2009. He has since been awarded research fellowships by Harvard University’s Center for Hellenic Studies (2011-13) and the European Union (Marie Curie, 2013). Before being elected as associate professor at the EHESS in 2019, he lectured ancient Greek philosophy at Leiden University (2014- 19). His research focuses mainly on ancient and modern philosophy of technology. He has published extensively in French and English, including Fabriquer le monde: Technique et cosmogonie dans la poésie grecque archaïque (Classiques Garnier, Paris 2018) and Hesiod and the Beginnings of Greek Philosophy (Brill, Leiden, 2022).

Sumie Nakaya
Dr. Nakaya joined Hitotsubashi University in March 2022. She is currently on special leave from the United Nations Department of Peace Operations, where she has since overseen peacekeeping efforts in Sudan and South Sudan, crisis management, strategic mission planning, and research involving the UN Charter and the work of the Security Council. Previously, she worked with the Conflict Prevention and Peace Forum of the Social Science Research Council, and the UN Development Fund for Women. She has published on post-war state building and gendered dimensions of peace negotiations in edited volumes (the UN University Press, the University of Alberta Press) and academic journals (Central Asian Survey, Global Governance), and taught in the Queens College, NY. She has a Ph.D. in Political Science at the City University of New York, Master’s Degree in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School in Boston, and Bachelor’s Degree from Sophia University in Tokyo.
