On March 1, 2023, the Institute for Global Governance Research (GGR) held a workshop titled “How to Create Impactful Presentations: From Content to Visuals” with Ms. Sascha Hannig Nuñez (Master’s student, School of International and Public Policy; GGR research assistant; Associate Researcher, IDD, Chile) as a lecturer. The workshop was conducted in English, with Mr. Michał Skubisz (Master’s student, School of International and Public Policy; GGR research assistant) providing interpretation into Japanese. A total of 15 people participated in the workshop, including students, faculty, and staff from Hitotsubashi University.

The workshop was divided into two parts. In the first part, attendees learned the importance of designing presentations by appropriately arranging elements such as text, images, and graphs to effectively communicate information. The “ten unwritten rules” for creating presentations were also introduced, which included the importance of always being aware of what the audience should focus on, using no more than two different fonts, using and balancing blank space, and “content is king.” Additionally, the workshop provided explanations on how to effectively arrange content on slides and how to create clear graphs from quantitative data.

In the second part of the workshop, attendees created professional and easy-to-understand presentation slides on the theme of poverty rates in various countries while referring to Ms. Sascha’s exemplary slides. Participants were able to create high-quality slides while being mindful of the content from the first part of the workshop, paying attention to elements such as font, image, and graph placement. In the second half, which lasted about an hour, participants learned directly from Sascha and also taught each other.
