Speaker information: Ambassador Kaoru Shimazaki was born in June 1958 in Usuki City, Oita Prefecture. He graduated from the Department of Law, Faculty of Law, Keio University, and joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1982. He underwent German language training and served as First Secretary at the Embassy of Japan in Germany (Bonn), followed by a posting as Counsellor at the Embassy of Japan in Indonesia. His career also included a role as Grand Chamberlain to the Crown Prince’s Household at the Imperial Household Agency. He later served as Director of the Overseas Public Relations Division, Minister at the Embassy of Japan in Germany (Berlin), and Minister at the Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka. Before his ambassadorships, he was Chief of Police for the Gunma Prefectural Police Headquarters and Consul-General of Japan in Düsseldorf. After serving as Chief of Protocol, he was appointed Ambassador of Japan to the Czech Republic and then to Jordan. He retired in October 2022. He is currently the Chairperson of the Japan Czech Friendship Association.
