On July 1, 2025, an article by Sascha Hannig Núñez, a doctoral student at the Graduate School of Law, titled “COMENTARIO Russia Today en Chile: consecuencias políticas y democráticas,” was published by the IR think tank ATHENA LAB on their website. The article discusses the recent launch of Russia’s state-run media outlet, Russia Today, on Chilean television through a non-transparent agreement with the private broadcaster Telecanal, and examines the broader reality and potential impact of foreign information manipulation and interference(FIMI) activities in South America. Ms. Hannig highlights vulnerabilities in Chile’s media system, including the lack of a national security perspective on the information space and the difficulty of regulating foreign content due to concerns over prior censorship and restrictions on freedom of expression. As a result, Chile has not implemented effective preventive measures against FIMI activities. She argues that Chile should begin participating in international discussions on how to address such influence operations.
