The HIAS Brown Bag Seminar is a new seminar series hosted by Hitotsubashi Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS).
The seminar series aims to promote interaction between HIAS researchers, faculty members, and students university-wide.
HIAS, with its 10 research centers, will continue to strive to function as a hub to facilitate active research collaboration throughout the University.

Title: “Language evolution and case outcomes in British and Irish Workmen’s Compensation cases, 1907-1947: A preliminary analysis”
Speaker: Simon Deakin (Specially Appointed Professor, HIAS／University of Cambridge, Director of Business Research Center, Professor, Faculty of Law)
Abstract: We use machine learning and natural language processing to study trends in British and Irish workmen’s compensation law of the early twentieth century. Exploratory analysis suggests that judges decided cases more restrictively (against claimants) during periods of recession and worker militancy. English and Scottish judges decided cases similarly, but the Irish case law did not follow the same pattern, for reasons most likely connected to the different sectoral composition of the Irish economy. We identify a latent structure to the legal language used in the cases, which predicts, in the sense of being correlated with, case outcomes. While litigation is a mechanism of transmission of economic shocks, judicial language is the medium through which the law is adjusted.
