On December 24, 2024, Professor Toshihiko Aono (Graduate School of Law, Hitotsubashi University) contributed to the translation of Not One Inch: America, Russia, and the Making of Post-Cold War Stalemate (by Professor M.E. Sarotti (Marie-Josée and Henry R. Kravis Distinguished Professor of Historical Studies, Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs, Johns Hopkins University), translators: Professor Yoko Iwama (National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies), Professor Yuichi Hosoya (Faculty of Law, Department of Political Science, Keio University), and Professor Takumi Itabashi (Graduate Schools for Law and Politics, University of Tokyo)) was published by Iwanami Shoten. Professor Aono contributed to translating Chapter 5. This book examines the rapid expansion of NATO to the east following Germany’s reunification, drawing on diplomatic documents and interviews with former government officials. The author argues that the rapid expansion of NATO to the east may have been an attempt to avoid deteriorating relations with Russia and to establish a security framework that includes Russia.
