On January 15, 2025, an article titled “Science Fiction, the Prophecies of Artificial Intelligence and the Transformation of Liberal Democracy” authored by Sascha Hannig Nuñez, a doctoral student in the Graduate School of Law, was published by EU-VALUES. This article connects widely shared science fiction predictions with academic research, illustrating concrete examples of Artificial Intelligence (AI) reshaping societal dynamics. It also offers insights into ongoing debates and scenarios that democracy advocates, policymakers, and reformers should consider when analyzing and evaluating emerging technologies. Hannig argues that discussions on AI’s potential impact on democratic processes—particularly in governance, data management, and elections—highlight these technologies’ transformative power and inherent risks. Beyond governance, the expansion of AI-driven surveillance technologies and large-scale data processing presents significant dilemmas for civil liberties and privacy. She points out that balancing security with individual rights will be a critical challenge. Furthermore, the role of AI in elections and public discourse introduces new risks.
