On December 17, 2024, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in collaboration with the Graduate School of Law and the Institute for Global Governance Research (GGR) at Hitotsubashi University, hosted a lecture titled “6 Years to Go: Dialogue with the UNDP Administrator on Innovative Approaches for a Sustainable Future” under the sponsorship of Josui-kai. The event featured Mr. Achim Steiner, UNDP Administrator, as the keynote speaker, with Professor Kazuhiro Obayashi and Professor Sumie Nakaya moderating. The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Achim Steiner. In his speech, Mr. Steiner examined the global challenges, emphasizing multilateralism, geopolitical tensions, and the UN’s role in fostering progress. Drawing on Japan’s post-WWII recovery, he highlighted the responsibilities of developed nations in tackling issues like democracy, cybersecurity, and cybercrime.
In a dialogue with Professor Nakaya, Mr. Steiner discussed the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), noting a fulfillment rate of just 17%, slowed by national priorities, wars, and COVID-19. However, he highlighted progress in specific goals, such as clean water access, energy, and poverty reduction. The discussion also explored misinformation, disinformation, and emerging technologies like AI. Mr. Steiner stressed thoughtful adaptation and government regulation of digital platforms, alongside citizens’ responsible engagement. Encouraging freshers to join the UNDP, Steiner highlighted the need for more Japanese participation and advised aspiring professionals to develop expertise in technology, economics, health, and innovation to thrive in development organizations.
During the Q&A, participants asked how the UNDP balances crisis responses with long-term solutions. The Administrator highlighted partnerships and collaboration as key strategies. When asked about his toughest decision, he shared the challenge of asking staff to work in dangerous conditions, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic when all UNDP offices remained operational despite risks.
In conclusion, UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner discussed global challenges, SDG progress, AI’s impact, and partnerships at Hitotsubashi University. He emphasized digital regulation, innovation skills, youth engagement, and decision-making in crises to promote sustainable development and resilient futures.
