On August 5th, 2024, CADAL published an article authored by Sascha HANNIG NUÑEZ, a student in the Doctoral Program of the Graduate School of Law, entitled “FTA with China: Copper Monoculture, Limited Diversification and Hidden Dependency.” In this paper, Ms. Hannig refers to the influence of authoritarian China on Chile’s economic field. While bilateral relations are increasing, she explains the high degree of Chile’s dependence on China, the concentration of trade relations on copper, and the potential impact of these on Chile is worrisome due to the vulnerability it implies. She also highlights that some experts were taking a defensive stance concerning Chile’s deepening dependence on China. Finally, Ms. Hannig explains the current situation, such as the stagnation of the Chinese economy. She concludes by touching on the sustainability of the FTA that Chile will face in the future.
