In July 2023, an article co-authored by Professor Yujin Woo of the Graduate School of Law (then) titled “Measuring National Refugee Policies: Recent Trends and Implications for Future Development” was published in Interdisciplinary Information Sciences. This article systematically reviews recent social science literature that quantitatively evaluates national refugee policies. They analyze prominent cross-national datasets, highlighting both the advantages and disadvantages of each and proposes ways to practically apply these datasets to better align with the interests of researchers and practitioners. Additionally, they suggest methods for more comprehensively integrating the scope and perspectives of these datasets. Finally, the article emphasizes that constructing a global, comprehensive dataset on refugee policies and UNHCR interventions based on existing datasets would make it possible to grasp how countries respond to refugees more accurately. This would not only open up new and intriguing research questions for quantitative and qualitative case studies but also help identify important cases for future research.
