Sunnylands Initiative Retreat II-Interview series, Professor Maiko Ichihara

Professor Maiko Ichihara took part in the second Sunnylands Initiative Retreat held on August 1 and 2, 2022 which was hosted by the Japan Center for International Exchange (JCIE). The professor pointed out the importance of creating a support mechanism for democracy within the Asian region, where democracy has faced a serious attack in South/Southeast Asia but is relatively preserved in Northeast Asia. She also commented on Japan’s role in defending democracy, stating that the current administration has stepped u to take measures such as through their acceptance of de-facto refugees from Ukraine. However, she argued that Japan should do more to assist those who are fighting for democracy and human rights in Asia.
